If I have a family emergency, what is covered?

Cover would be dependent on the particular situation:

1) You would have cover up to the benefit limit for trip cancellation, trip disruption and trip resumption expenses if your close relative is hospitalised or dies unexpectedly, provided:

a)  You can reasonably demonstrate that the hospitalisation or death is not related to a pre-existing medical condition, or

b) The reason for the hospitalisation or death is due to a pre-existing medical condition that is on our list of covered pre-existing medical conditions.

Note:
  • If you have not yet left for your trip, you have provision to claim up to the benefit limit for the cancellation or rescheduling of your trip.
  • If you have already left Australia, you have provision to claim up to the benefit limit for the expenses incurred to return to Australia to be with your family member, and also to resume your trip.

2) The most that we will pay for trip cancellation or trip disruption in total is 25% of your non-refundable claim expenses up to a maximum of $2,000, and up to $1,500 for trip resumption expenses if your close relative is hospitalised or dies:

a)  Due to a pre-existing medical condition that is NOT on our list of covered pre-existing medical conditions, or

b) You are unable to reasonably demonstrate that your close relative’s hospitalisation or death is not related to a pre-existing medical condition.

3) There would be no cover If you were aware that your close relative has a pre-existing medical condition at the time of your policy purchase AND you were aware of the likelihood of hospitalisation or death.

Note:

  • You only have this cover if you have the Comprehensive, Standard Saver, Domestic Plus, Snow Sports Plus or Frequent Traveller Saver policy
  • There is no cover if the family member does not reside in Australia or New Zealand.
  • There is no cover under any situation if your close relative is older than 84 years of age.

Cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).
