Can I buy travel insurance if my trip starts overseas but continues from Australia?
Most travel insurance policies are designed to cover trips that both begin and end in Australia. For instance, if your journey starts in another country, such as New Zealand, and you then continue on from Australia to another destination, you may not be eligible to purchase our policy as your trip did not start in Australia.
To be eligible, your travel generally needs to begin from your home in Australia and end when you return there. If you are already overseas when your trip begins, you may be able to purchase an Already Overseas policy. An Already Overseas policy is generally for customers who have already departed Australia before purchasing an insurance policy. There are eligibility requirements to be able to purchase an Already Overseas policy which are set out in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).
Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.
