Does travel insurance cover carrier operational issues like staffing shortages or mechanical problems?

Most travel insurance policies do not provide cover for carrier operational issues such as staffing shortages, technical, or mechanical problems simply because they occurred. Instead, cover may apply under certain policy benefits for reasonable additional expenses you incur as a result of the carrier's operational issues.

For example, depending on the policy you choose at Fast Cover Travel Insurance, cover may be available under the following benefits subject to the policy terms and conditions:

Travel Delay Expenses: Up to $200 per insured adult, per day, for reasonable additional accommodation and meal costs if your carrier is delayed for more than 6 hours and for each subsequent 24-hour period beyond the initial 6-hour delay. The total benefit limit is up to $2,000.

Special Event Transport Expenses: Up to $5,000 for reasonable additional travel expenses to reach the special event on time if your scheduled transport is cancelled, delayed, shortened or diverted during your trip and that means you would not arrive on time.

Important to know:

  • These benefits are only available on select policies.

  • Special events means pre-booked, pre-paid and pre-arranged wedding, funeral, conference, concert, sporting event, cruise or tour package.

  • There is no cover for Trip Cancellation Expenses or Trip Disruption Expenses if your carrier reschedules or cancels your scheduled or connecting transport, unless it’s due to a strike, riot, hijack, civil protest, severe weather, or natural disaster.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.
