Does travel insurance cover airline operational issues like staffing shortages or mechanical problems?

If your flight is delayed due to airline operational issues (such as staffing shortages, technical, or mechanical problems), cover may apply under certain benefits for your loss of unrecoverable expenses:

  • Travel Delay Expenses: Up to $200 per insured adult, per day (maximum 10 days), for reasonable accommodation and meal costs if your delay is more than 6 hours.
  • Special Event Transport Expenses: Up to $5,000 for reasonable additional transport costs if you need to reach a special event on time.

Important to know:

  • These benefits are only available on select policies.
  • There is no cover for cancelled accommodation, tours, or cruises caused by airline operational issues.
  • There is no cover for Trip Cancellation or Trip Disruption if an airline reschedules or cancels your flight, unless it’s due to a strike, riot, hijack, civil protest, severe weather, or natural disaster.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.
