What is the etiquette for travel in China?

  • Greetings: A slight nod or handshake is polite; avoid overly demonstrative gestures.
  • Dining: Never stick chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice as it relates to funeral customs. Also, tipping is uncommon but appreciated for exceptional service.
  • Public behaviour: Do not speak loudly or make calls on public transport. Queue respectfully in public spaces.
  • Shoes: Remove your shoes before entering someone’s home.
