Does travel insurance cover volcanic ash clouds?
Fast Cover travel insurance may provide cover if your trip is disrupted or you are injured due to a volcanic ash cloud. The level of cover depends on the type of policy you have chosen:
- Medical cover: Comprehensive, Snow Sports Plus, Standard Saver, Frequent Traveller Saver, and Basics policies may provide medical cover if you are injured as a result of the natural disaster.
- Travel and accommodation arrangements: Comprehensive, Snow Sports Plus, Standard Saver, Frequent Traveller Saver, and Domestic Plus policies may provide cover towards additional costs if your scheduled or connecting transport is cancelled, delayed, rescheduled, or diverted due to a natural disaster.
- Travel delays and special event transport: Comprehensive, Snow Sports Plus, Frequent Traveller Saver, and Domestic Plus policies may provide cover if your transport disruption causes delays or impacts special event connections.
Whether cover applies may also depend on:
- If the volcanic ash cloud was unforeseen when you booked your travel.
- When you purchased your travel insurance policy.
- Whether your travel took place against the advice or warnings of a government, official body, or widely reported media warnings about the natural disaster.
Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.
