What should I do if I am jailed overseas?

If you are placed in jail while overseas, you might want to consider the following:

  1. Finding a local lawyer as soon as possible
  2. Contacting the nearest Australian embassy or consulate: Embassies and Consulates Overseas
  3. Contacting the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) for further guidance: DFAT Assistance

When you are overseas, the local laws and penalties apply to you. The Australian Government cannot override or change local laws, court decisions, or penalties, but consular staff can provide limited assistance, such as contacting your family or helping you find legal representation.
