Can I claim medical expenses if I get sick overseas from a disease I wasn’t vaccinated against?
Travelling without the recommended vaccinations can sometimes put you at risk. If you become unwell overseas from a disease that you could have been vaccinated against, your cover may be affected. This is because travel insurance has exclusions that may apply if you don’t follow government or official health advice for the country you’re visiting.
For example, if a vaccination is required for entry into a destination, or strongly recommended for safe travel, choosing not to get that vaccine (without a valid medical reason, such as pregnancy or an existing condition) could impact whether a claim for medical expenses is considered.
It’s important to remember that every traveller’s situation is unique. If you do get sick overseas, you’re still able to submit a claim, and the claims team will carefully review your circumstances in line with the terms and exclusions in the PDS.
Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.
