What does the Permanent Disability benefit cover?

The Permanent Disability benefit provides a lump sum payment if you are injured due to circumstances listed in our PDS, during your overseas trip and, as a direct result of that injury, within 12 months of the injury date, you suffer:

  • Permanent loss of sight in one or both eyes, or
  • Permanent loss of use of one or more limbs.

and in the opinion of an appropriate medical practitioner specialising in the relevant field, with medical evidence, that the loss will last for at least 12 consecutive months from the Injury date, and that the loss will continue indefinitely without any hope of improvement.

The benefit amount payable will depend on the level of cover in your policy and is outlined in the Benefit Limits section of the PDS. This cover is designed to provide financial support for serious, life-changing injuries that occur during your trip. We may at our option, engage an appropriate medical practitioner specialising in the relevant field (at our expense) to examine you and assess your circumstances, to provide their opinion and to confirm if you are permanently disabled due to an Injury.

It’s important to note that cover only applies if the disability results from an unexpected and sudden accident during your overseas trip, and not from illness or existing medical conditions.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.
