Am I covered if I am taking aspirin as a preventative measure?
If you are taking any blood thinning medication on the advice of a doctor or which has been prescribed by a doctor, whether it is Aspirin or Warfarin and regardless of the severity of the medication, it is still considered a blood thinner.
As per the General Exclusions in our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), we will not pay any claims that arise from you taking blood thinning prescription medication.
Aspirin as a preventative measure
Even if you are not taking aspirin to treat a specific medical condition, due to the potential side effects of taking aspirin, we are not able to provide cover for any complications that could arise due to you taking the aspirin.
For example: You are taking aspirin as a preventative measure, and while overseas you trip over and break your leg. If there are complications from that accident (like excessive bleeding), and this complication is related to you taking the aspirin, your claim may be denied.
Aspirin to treat a pre-existing medical condition
If you are taking aspirin to treat a pre-existing medical condition, you would not be covered for:
- Your pre-existing condition if it is not on our list of automatically covered pre-existing medical conditions, AND
- Any complications that could arise due to you taking the aspirin.
Claims are assessed on a case by case basis and the outcome of your claim will depend on your specific situation.
Cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).
