Does travel insurance cover me for my medical expenses if I drive a friend's car when I'm overseas?
Depending on the policy chosen and the type of expenses you are seeking, cover may be available under the policy benefits.
The Overseas Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses benefit may be able to provide cover for the reimbursement of the reasonable overseas emergency medical, or hospital expenses incurred by you during your trip until you get back to Australia if you become unexpectedly injured in an accident while driving your friend’s car overseas.
Cover is not available in certain scenarios such as (but not limited to):
- If you were racing or were in a competition of any sort
- If your claim arises from you being in control of a motor vehicle without a current Australian driver’s license
- If you claim arises directly or indirectly from you using alcohol or drugs (unless the drugs have been prescribed by your medical practitioner)
Eligibility criteria, policy terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits apply. Consider the PDS prior to deciding on which policy is right for you and your needs.
Any advice is general advice only and does not take into account your individual objectives, financial situation, or needs. Please consider the PDS before making any decisions regarding the purchase of travel insurance.
As each individual’s circumstances are different, we will assess each claim on a case-by-case basis in accordance with your specific circumstances, policy terms, and Certificate of Insurance.
