Does travel insurance cover flight changes?
Depending on the reason for the flight changes and the policy chosen, and depending on the type of expenses you are seeking, cover may be available under the policy benefits for flight changes. Some of the benefits that might be relevant, include but are not limited to:
The Trip Cancellation Expenses benefit can reimburse you for costs such as your non-refundable pre-paid trip bookings which can include flights, for reasons covered under the policy.
Trip Disruption Expenses benefit is available to provide protection against the financial burden of reasonable additional costs which can include flight changes, you incur whilst you are still on your trip, if it is interrupted for reasons covered under the policy benefit.
Our Travel Delay Expenses benefit can reimburse you up to $200 for each traveller (excluding Dependants) for the reasonable additional meals and accommodation expenses during your trip, if your flight has been cancelled, rescheduled or delayed for at least 6 hours from the time it was scheduled to depart.
What are some of the types of situations flight changes may be covered?
Below are just some examples of some situations in which flight changes may be covered under your policy. It is important to read the PDS prior to deciding which policy is right for you and your particular trip, and relevant terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub-limits that apply:
- If the flight was cancelled due to a reason that is covered under the policy, such as an unexpected illness or injury that prevents you from travelling.
- If your scheduled or connecting flight is cancelled, delayed, shortened or diverted due to a natural disaster.
What are some of the situations that flight changes may not be covered?
These are a few examples of some situations in which flight changes may not be covered. It is important that you read the relevant PDS and are aware of the terms and conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits that may apply:
- Where you or your travel companion change plans or decide not to continue with the intended trip.
- Failure to comply with ticketing or booking conditions or requirements, such as missing your flight due to arriving late for reasons within your control.
