Is my luggage covered if I check it in and it’s transported in the airline’s cargo hold?

You can still submit a claim for most everyday luggage if it’s lost, damaged or stolen while checked in. However, some items aren’t covered when placed in the cargo hold. Jewellery, cash, travel documents, mobile phones, cameras, laptops, tablets and other computer equipment are not covered if they’re transported in checked-in luggage.

If any of these valuables go missing from a checked bag, the airline may be responsible instead. When it’s reasonably possible, report the loss to the airline straight away and get a written report to support your claim.

There is one exception. If an airline or government authority instructs you to check in electronic devices due to regulation, you may still have cover.

All other normal luggage items, like clothing and toiletries, may still be covered when checked in.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.
