Can I choose my own doctor if I get sick or injured?

You are generally free to choose your own medical practitioner overseas, or we can appoint an approved practitioner to treat you if your claim is covered under the policy. In some cases, such as when you are treated under a Reciprocal Health Agreement, it may not be possible to select your own doctor.

It’s important that you:

  • Advise us if you are admitted to hospital or if you are returning to Australia early on written medical advice, so we can approve this in advance.
  • Understand that if you choose your own doctor and the treatment doesn’t meet your expectations, we can assist you, but we may not be able to help you for any problems that result from your choice of practitioner.

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.
