Does travel insurance cover natural disasters?

Fast Cover travel insurance may provide cover if your trip is affected by a natural disaster, such as a flood, cyclone, bushfire, earthquake, volcanic eruption, or ash cloud. The type of cover available depends on the policy you purchase and the circumstances of your trip.

Cover may include:

  • Medical expenses if you are injured as a direct result of the natural disaster
  • Trip cancellation or disruption if your prepaid travel or accommodation is affected
  • Travel delays or additional transport costs if your scheduled or connecting transport is cancelled, delayed, or diverted due to the event

Whether cover applies will depend on:

  • When you purchased your policy
  • Whether the natural disaster was unforeseen at the time of purchase
  • Whether you travelled against government or official “Do Not Travel” warnings

Every claim is reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis and will only be paid if it meets the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions in your policy. Always check the PDS carefully so you know exactly what’s included before you travel.
