Can I buy a policy for one way trip?
Yes, only if you intend to return to Australia.
The reason why you must have the 'intention' to return to Australia is because if you have a serious medical issue, regardless of how long you have been overseas or how much longer you had intended to stay, the Emergency Assistance team may choose to repatriate you back to Australia for any ongoing medical treatment. This means that you must continue to have a valid Australian Medicare card, and/or private health insurance for the duration of your overseas trip. Your travel insurance policy will end once we return you to Australia, so you will be liable for any medical expenses you incur in Australia. You do not have the option to choose to remain in your destination country for ongoing treatment unless it has been approved by us.
If you are not sure of when you will be returning to Australia, we still need for you to specify a nominal Return Date so that we can calculate the price of your premium. Once you confirm the actual date that you will return to Australia, you can request to extend your policy to that Return Date.
Note:
- The policy Depart Date must be your departure date from Australia.
- The maximum duration of a policy is 24 months.
- If you are a non-permanent resident, you must hold a return ticket to Australia and have a home in Australia to which you intend to return.
- Our one way policies are for travellers who travel overseas, are not sure of their return date, but do intend to return to Australia. They are NOT intended for travellers who are migrating overseas permanently and simply want cover for the journey to their new country of residence.
- If you return to Australia earlier than the Return Date as specified on your policy, there is no refund for the unused portion of your policy.
Cover is subject to the policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).
